Over the past quarter-century, Gothic Voices has become world-renowned for the refinement, purity and spirituality of its performance of medieval music. With its core membership of Catherine King, Steven Harrold, Julian Podger, Leigh Nixon and Stephen Charlesworth, the group has established a unique method of working: employing four of the five singers for most concert performances and inviting guest artists to join them for recordings and special projects.
Although now run collectively by its members, Gothic Voices has remained firmly wedded to the principle established more than 25 years ago by its founder, Christopher Page, namely to bring medieval works into the musical mainstream by means of world-class performances through a thought-provoking range of well-researched programmes.
Gothic Voices has performed in major concert venues throughout Europe, Scandinavia, Israel, North and South America to immense acclaim. In Britain the group has appeared at the Promenade Concerts, the Wigmore Hall and at the South Bank Centre together with major Festivals such as Aldeburgh, Cheltenham and Edinburgh. A highlight of 2007 was the group's concert in Westminster Abbey celebrating the 800th anniversary of the birth of King Henry III, builder of the current Abbey Church.
Over the past 10 years or so Gothic Voices has commissioned a number of contemporary works with medieval associations. These include Ave Regina celorum by Bayan Northcott, first performed in the Cheltenham Festival, and Andrew Keeling's Powered by Joy, first recorded and performed in Slovenia in 2005.
Earlier this year Gothic Voices recorded another CD for the AVIE label of works by the 14th century Italian composer Francesco Landini and his contemporaries, due for release in the early autumn of 2008.
